What You Need to Know

About the Flu

The flu — or influenza — is a highly contagious respiratory infection caused by influenza viruses. It spreads rapidly, especially during seasonal outbreaks, and can affect anyone, particularly children, seniors, and those with underlying conditions.

How Does the Flu Spread?

The virus mainly spreads through respiratory droplets and aerosols released when an infected person talks, coughs, or sneezes within 15 cm of others. It can also spread by touching contaminated surfaces, then touching your eyes, nose, or mouth.

Why Prevention Matters

While the flu might seem like just another seasonal nuisance, it can lead to serious complications. That's why health experts, including the WHO, emphasize annual flu vaccination as one of the most effective ways to reduce infection and protect your community.

Which Flu Vaccine

Should You Choose?

This season, SinoUnited Health offers two internationally recognized Quadrivalent Influenza Vaccines:

  • Hualan (华兰) — suitable for children and adults

  • Pasteur (巴斯德) — known for high efficacy and broad protection

Both are split or subunit vaccines, meaning they contain purified components of the flu virus — not live virus — making them safe and effective for a wide population.

What Does the WHO Recommend

for 2025-2026?

For the 2025–2026 flu season, the WHO has updated its recommended strains for the Northern Hemisphere. Among them:

  • A/Croatia/10136RV/2023 (H3N2) — now included in the updated vaccines

  • mRNA flu vaccines — now officially listed in WHO guidance for the first time

Choosing a Quadrivalent Vaccine ensures protection against four key flu strains:

H1N1, H3N2, B/Victoria, and B/Yamagata.

🌟 Pro tip: Immunity fades over time, and flu strains evolve — that's why the WHO recommends getting vaccinated annually, preferably before end of October in the Northern Hemisphere.
