Shanghai Weather Reversal: Cold Air to Drop Temps by 10°C This Weekend

After days of stifling humidity and summer-like heat, Shanghai is bracing for a dramatic weather turnaround. Yesterday, the city sweltered under oppressive conditions, with the Xujiahui weather station recording a high of 31.7°C. Across the city, temperatures ranged between 29°C and 33°C — a final surge of summer heat.

But change is coming fast.

Starting today, a significant weather shift is underway. Influenced by the periphery of a subtropical high and spreading near-surface cold air, the city will begin to cool rapidly. By this weekend, temperatures are expected to drop sharply — by as much as 10°C — ushering in a seasonal transition that will finally put short sleeves to rest.

Today's forecast calls for overcast skies with intermittent light rain. The cooling has already begun, with early morning temperatures hovering around a comfortable 22°C.

The high for the day is expected to be around 25°C, significantly lower than the previous days. Winds will be from the north at 3–4 on the Beaufort scale, increasing to 4–5 along coastal and riverside areas. Relative humidity will range from 90% to 60%, eliminating the muggy feel.

From Wednesday through Friday, Shanghai will remain on the edge of the subtropical high, with mostly cloudy to overcast skies and occasional short showers. A more noticeable period of rain and potential thunderstorms is forecast for Wednesday evening. Daytime temperatures will briefly rebound to around 29°C, but mornings and nights will remain pleasant with lows of 23–25°C.

A cold front is expected to arrive around Saturday, bringing with it another round of rain, a noticeable drop in temperature, and gusty winds. By early next week, the mercury could dip below 22°C citywide — signaling the real arrival of autumn.

Prepare for what locals are calling a "season-switching cooldown" — and get ready to trade in your summer wardrobe.
