On September 15, a netizen posted photos showing multiple Black male students inside the Liángjiāng No.6 building, clearly labeled as a "female dormitory" with signs stating "Men Keep Out." The post questioned the school's decision to place male students in a female-only residence, raising concerns among residents about privacy, safety, and campus protocols.

Journalists from Jimu News reached out to university staff on September 16. A representative from the Huaxi Campus student management office stated that she was unaware of such a situation and confirmed that no gender-mixed housing arrangements existed at that campus.

However, a staff member from the Liangjiang Campus Management Committee later confirmed the reports. She explained that the male international students had just arrived in China on September 15 and, due to incomplete dormitory preparations, were temporarily assigned to lower floors (1st to 4th) of Building 6. The floors were reportedly partitioned to maintain separation from female students.

According to the official, all necessary facilities in Building 16 were completed the following day, and the international students were scheduled to move into that building immediately on September 16.

Despite this reply, public sentiment remained largely critical. Many commenters questioned the school's priorities and decision-making process, suggesting alternative arrangements such as  placing them in budget hotels for one night.

Some of the most liked online comments read:

"If it's only one night, why not book them a budget hotel?"

"Why couldn't they be temporarily placed in the male dorms instead?"
