Chikungunya fever has recently become a topic of growing concern across the region. On August 2, Hong Kong confirmed its first imported case of Chikungunya, marking a significant moment in the spread of the disease.
That same evening, authorities in Sanshui District, Foshan, Guangdong Province, issued a public health advisory regarding the potential long-term effects of Chikungunya fever. The notice emphasized the seriousness of the illness and the importance of prevention.
Chikungunya fever is an acute infectious disease transmitted by Aedes mosquitoes. Currently, there is no specific antiviral treatment available. Common symptoms include persistent high fever (above 39°C), severe joint pain, and skin rashes. In some cases, patients may suffer from chronic pain or serious complications, significantly affecting their health and quality of life.
Understanding Chikungunya and Its Transmission
Chikungunya is caused by the chikungunya virus and is typically characterized by joint pain so severe it can cause the body to curl up in discomfort. As a mosquito-borne disease, it is not spread through casual contact or respiratory droplets, but exclusively through mosquito bites.
For those infected, adequate rest, proper hydration, and the use of over-the-counter pain relievers like acetaminophen can help alleviate symptoms. Experts warn against the use of aspirin or other nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) such as ibuprofen until dengue fever is ruled out, to avoid the risk of bleeding complications.
Four Key Prevention Tips
1.Mosquito-Proof Your Home
Use mosquito coils, bed nets, and window screens to prevent mosquitoes from entering your living space and biting you.
2.Eliminate Standing Water and Trash
Mosquitoes breed in stagnant water. Removing sources of standing water and cleaning up garbage can significantly reduce mosquito populations, cutting off the transmission of diseases like Chikungunya and dengue fever.
3.Wear Protective Clothing and Use Repellent
When going outdoors, wear light-colored long-sleeve shirts and pants. Regularly apply mosquito repellent to protect yourself and your family.
4.Community-Wide Mosquito Control
Collective efforts are crucial. Everyone must participate in mosquito elimination campaigns to curb the spread of the virus.
Choosing and Using Mosquito Repellents Effectively
Experts stress that preventing mosquito bites—particularly from Aedes mosquitoes—is the most effective way to avoid Chikungunya. Applying mosquito repellent is the most commonly recommended method.
When choosing a repellent, check the product label for an official pesticide registration number and manufacturing license—these indicate the product is effective and safe for human use within permissible limits. Also, pay attention to the product's duration of protection. If the label claims more than four hours of effectiveness, it can be reapplied accordingly. For enhanced protection, reapply more frequently as needed.
Authorities continue to urge the public to remain vigilant and take proactive measures against mosquito bites to help contain the spread of Chikungunya fever.
