Have you ever imagined saying "I do" over sizzling hotpot feast? A millennial couple in Taiyuan, North China's Shanxi Province hosted their wedding banquet in a hotpot restaurant. For just 22,500 yuan ($3,100), 140 guests enjoyed bubbling broths as the venue was transformed with wedding-themed decorations, giving the event a modern and unconventional twist.
The couple had initially booked a local hotel for a traditional wedding banquet but was abruptly informed on April 25 by the venue that it would halt operations due to special circumstances days before their big day.
With little time to spare, the bride surnamed Zhao and her fiancé explored alternatives. "A friend suggested we hold the wedding at a hotpot restaurant," Zhao said.
She and her fiancé had previously joked about the idea, but facing this unexpected cancellation, they decided, "Why not shake things up with something bold?"
They selected a local Haidilao hotpot branch in Taiyuan as their wedding venue, which could accommodate up to 500 people, according to People's Daily. The restaurant staff readily agreed and helped transform the venue into a festive wedding venue, decorating it with celebratory wall banners, neon signs, a red balloon arch at the entrance, and even rolled out life-sized cutouts of the couple.
During the banquet, the couple performed a lion dance. "It symbolizes good fortune and honors tradition," explained Zhao. "We wanted that lucky vibe."
The relaxed, two-hour event featured guests enjoying hotpot while playing games, "Afterward, I received countless photos and videos from guests showing the carnival-like atmosphere," Zhao said.
The total banquet cost came to 22,500 yuan, and the receipt reportedly stretched nearly two meters in length. Zhao said she was very satisfied with the unconventional celebration, noting that the small-scale wedding prioritized fun over wedding gifts.
"Young people today view weddings differently from older generations — we prefer simple, stress-free celebrations," Zhao said. For her and her husband, the happiness of their guests and the sincere blessings they received made the occasion truly meaningful.
