As of April 15, Shanghai Metro has officially achieved full 5G network coverage across its entire system. Even during rush hour, passengers can now enjoy seamless streaming and high-speed browsing. In tunnel sections, average network speeds exceed an impressive 600 Mbps.

But that's not all—Shanghai Metro has also built a dedicated high-speed private 5G network, making it the world's first large-scale urban transit system to deploy such advanced infrastructure.

Sharp-eyed commuters have already noticed the boost in connectivity. Some even posted online, enviously admired by users from other cities.

During a peak-hour ride on Line 1, a reporter joined engineers from Shanghai Mobile. Despite a nearly packed train, live tests showed download speeds soaring past 1800 Mbps and uploads topping 150 Mbps—performance on par with gigabit broadband.

Multiple operators have joined forces to make this full 5G coverage a reality. Alongside it, the dedicated network supports vital metro operations, like fault handling and maintenance.

Line 1 has also piloted a 5G-based on-site communication system. In simulated breakdowns, dispatchers can now video-connect directly with train drivers—replacing old radio-only methods. This enables instant, guided troubleshooting and synchronized operations with the control center.

The result? Faster, more accurate emergency responses. And this is only the beginning. Shanghai Metro is already exploring more digital applications built on this next-gen network.

Ji Wenli from the Shanghai Rail Transit Technology Research Center noted that various management systems are being aligned with the 5G backbone to ensure safe and efficient operations.
