Metro Mystery in Shanghai: Foreign Tourists' Thanks Turn to Shock

Officer Zhang Jiawei from the Shanghai Metro Police Disney Station Substation shared, "Using a translation app, we understood the bag was white and contained cash and important documents. It was crucial to them." After contacting several stations, the police discovered that a similar bag had been turned in at Shendu Highway Station.
However, the situation quickly took an unexpected turn. When the foreign passengers arrived at the station to retrieve the bag, they found that the ¥2,400 in cash was missing.
Surveillance footage told the real story. The video showed the two women seated with the bag next to them. A male passenger then sat beside them, partially blocking the view. When the women got off the train, they left the bag behind. The footage revealed that the man later took the bag off the train. A closer look showed him discreetly rifling through it and slipping something into his pocket—presumably the cash.
Ironically, this same man handed the bag over to the station staff, portraying himself as a "helpful citizen."
The police quickly traced the man to a nearby card room. Upon confrontation and explanation of the law, he admitted to taking the money and returned the full amount to the authorities.
On the afternoon of March 28, the relieved foreign passengers returned to retrieve their missing cash and repeatedly expressed their gratitude to the police.
One user commented, "It's really embarrassing—there are surveillance cameras everywhere these days, don't do things like this!" Another praised the swift response from the police. As always in Shanghai, good-hearted people far outnumber the bad. Still, it's a reminder: when you're out and about, keep a close eye on your belongings.
