A heartwarming yet bittersweet story of a Dutch-Chinese man's 30-year search for his biological family has recently captivated audiences worldwide. The man, Gao Qingsong (also known as Gao Yang), was born in Xuzhou, Jiangsu, and lost his parents at the age of three while traveling with them to visit relatives in Sichuan. During a train transfer at Chengdu station in 1994, Gao's mother went to buy tickets, only to return and find that both her husband and son had disappeared. Despite an extensive search, they could not find each other. Gao was later taken to a welfare home in Sichuan and renamed Gou Yongming.
In 1996, a Dutch couple adopted Gao, and he moved to the Netherlands, where he thrived in a loving home. He excelled academically, earning a master's degree in linguistics and later a Ph.D. in Canada. However, a growing curiosity about his origins led him to embark on a long and difficult journey to find his birth family. In 2007, he and his adoptive parents visited China and the welfare home, but language barriers and the passage of time hindered their search. Over the years, Gao continued his search through DNA tests and media appeals. His perseverance finally paid off in 2023 when a Chinese nonprofit confirmed they had located his family.
The news caused an emotional reaction from Gao's mother, who had long suffered from the loss. Tragically, Gao's adoptive mother passed away shortly before the reunion. In 2023, Gao, accompanied by his elderly adoptive father, traveled to Sichuan, where he was reunited with his mother. Despite the pain of the long separation, they embraced each other in a tearful, heartfelt reunion. Gao now plans to balance his work abroad with regular visits to care for his biological mother and adoptive father, who will always remain an important part of his life.
