South Africa becomes 81st nation with confirmed coronavirus


South Africa's Health Minister confirmed the country's first case of the new coronavirus on Thursday, making it the 81st nation with the disease.

Italy reports 41 new coronavirus deaths, bringing toll to 148

Italy has reported 41 new deaths from the novel coronavirus, its highest single-day total to date, bringing the number of fatalities in Europe's most affected country to 148.

First death in UK


The UK has recorded its first death in the new coronavirus outbreak, England's chief medical officer Chris Whitty said. 


"I am very sorry to report a patient in England who tested positive for COVID-19 has sadly died," he said in a statement, according to AFP news agency, adding the patient at the Royal Berkshire Hospital in Reading, west of London, was elderly and had "underlying health conditions".


US Congress passes $8.3bn emergency funding for coronavirus fight


The US Congress has passed an $8.3bn emergency spending bill to address the coronavirus crisis as infections spread to at least 14 states and deaths reached 11.


3 More Deaths in France, Total 7


Three more people have died from coronavirus infection in France on Thursday, taking the total to seven, while the number of confirmed infections rose by 138 to 423, a health official said.


A total of 23 people are in a very serious condition, health agency director Jerome Salomon said at a daily briefing about the virus.

Formal proposal to postpone matches shared: FIFA


FIFA shared a formal proposal to postpone upcoming matches in the Asian FIFA World Cup 2022 and AFC Asian Cup 2023 qualifiers with relevant member associations.

UK airline Flybe collapses as virus hits flights worldwide


[CGTN] One of UK's biggest airlines, Flybe, collapsed Thursday with all its flights grounded, the company said, as the coronavirus epidemic takes a heavy toll on airlines around the world. 


A statement on Flybe's website said the company had entered administration and could not arrange alternative flights for its passengers. 


"All flights have been grounded and the UK business has ceased trading with immediate effect," said the airline, which avoided going bust in January only after being granted a tax holiday by the UK government.

20.3 Tons of Wildlife Products Seized



The Chinese General Administration of Customs Thursday launched a special campaign to crack down on wildlife smuggling, and seized 20.3 tons of wildlife products such as gecko, a second-class national protected animal.



Jiangsu Woman Used Microwave to Disinfect Banknotes



A woman in Jiangsu province used a microwave to sterilize the banknotes, causing it to burn. 


According to the requirements of the people's Bank of China, the cash collected from key epidemicwill be first disinfected and then stored for 14 days, before it can be released to the market; while cash collected from non key epidemic areas get stored (quarantined) for 7 days, theres no need to disinfect the banknotes collected from the banks.
