China Rolls Out Online Tuition Before Spring Semester Opens

Online tuition has been promoted as an effective method for students to continue receiving education as schools across China are required to postpone the opening of the spring semester to block the spread of the coronavirus epidemic. The following introduces a few examples of how such logistics are being tackled.

A high school in Wuhan, the epicenter of the virus outbreak in central China's Hubei province, organized grade three students to sit an online exam on Jan 28. The exam was invigilated by students parents at home. After the test scores were revealed, the teachers analyzed the examination papers for the students online.

The Open University of China in Beijing has collaborated with various colleges and universities to provide free courses for people having a demand for education, and launched an online platform on which 3,000 teaching materials are available for middle schools, high schools, vocational schools and training organizations.

The Ministry of Education is working to integrate national, local and school-related teaching resources, so as to provide a wide variety of high-quality online teaching resources that could cover all regions, according to an official with the Ministry of Education.

The ministry plans to open a national teaching program on Feb.17 that will be based on the curriculum resources under excellent teaching projects, and will absorb other high-quality online teaching resources for schools in various regions.

In addition, in order to enrich high-quality online learning resources, the Ministry of Education also coordinated education departments in Beijing, Shanghai, Zhejiang and Sichuan to provide free local school-based online learning resources before schools open in those locations.
