Top 100 Cities in the World for Global Value! New Ranking!

On November 11th, 2019, China Academy of Urban Planning and Design released the ranking of 485 major cities. The ranking includes cities with a population of more than 1 million, national capitals, and some important port cities in the world.


The cities are ranked through their innovation network, production/service network, and global connectivity. Each is worth as 1/3 of the total weighted score.


The specific indicators include the degree of association of scientific and technological innovation enterprises, the strengthening of Unicorn enterprises, the number of patents, and the degree of aggregation of manufacturing enterprise headquarters. Additionally, 15 indicators, such as the association degree of multinational service enterprises, financial center index, aviation service capacity and shipping capacity are included.



Top "Dynamic" Cities for Global Value


As per the report, Tokyo is the city with the highest global value vitality index and overall scores with Hong Kong and Beijing, ranking second and third. Among the top 20 cities in the world, China has five cities: Hong Kong, Beijing, Shanghai, Guangzhou and Shenzhen.



Top 20 Cities for Innovation and Urban Potential


Innovation network is one of the three dimensions of the evaluation system. It is evaluated based on six indicators. Namely, the association degree of global representative technological innovation enterprises, the strength of Unicorn enterprises, the number of top 100 universities in the world, the basic scientific research ability, the number of WIPO patents and the global innovation city index.


In terms of cities, San Francisco relies on Silicon Valley, where scientific and technological innovation enterprises gather, ranking the first in the global innovation network; Beijing, Tokyo and London are ranking second, third and fourth respectively, but the advantages of them are different. The strength of Unicorn enterprises in Beijing is relatively outstanding, patent activities in Tokyo are active, and a large number of high-quality universities are gathered in London.



Among the top 20 cities in innovation ranking, Beijing, Hong Kong, Shanghai, Hangzhou and Shenzhen are listed in China, and San Francisco, New York, Los Angeles and Seattle are listed in the United States. The total number of cities listed in the two countries accounts for about half of the top 20.


In regard to the top 20 of innovation and urban potential cities in China; Guangzhou, Chengdu, Nanjing, Hefei are also in the forefront, and the northeast cities of Harbin and Changchun are also on the list.


Top 20 cities for Global Infrastructure Connection Network


For the report, the global connectivity infrastructure network focuses on the support capacity of people, as well as logistics and information. Logistics and information consists of aviation and maritime service level, and information connectivity capacity. From the perspective of global regions, the pattern is relatively balanced, and there is no significant difference in the level of infrastructure between countries in the world.



The report mainly refers to the data of 2018, when Hong Kong's global connectivity ranked first. And also Dubai, Singapore, Shanghai, Tokyo, New York and other top cities are all international hub cities, with strong strength in aviation, navigation and land transportation.

Taking Singapore as an example, Changi Airport in Singapore is one of the largest international aviation hubs in Southeast Asia. In 2018, the passenger throughput of it reached 65.63 million people, nearly 10 times of its population. Accurately, Singapore has been the largest shipping center in the world for six consecutive years.
