She Pretended to Be Her Friend's Boyfriend for 8 Years! And Now

The recent story of a Shanghainese girl who found out that the boy she had been in love with for 8 years turned out to be her best friend broke out and made waves online. This summary alone could be easily turned into a TV drama series

Sound complicated? It is.

Read on.

On October 21, a young and anxious woman named Yiyi went to a local police station in Shanghai to report an unusual case.

Feeling hopeless and crying hysterically, she began telling the officers on duty that her boyfriend, who supposedly works as a sailor, had fallen ill while at sea and needed urgent medical assistance which, like many other scams, required a significant amount of money.

But as it turned out, this wasnt the first time that her boyfriend, called A Feng, had reportedly been ill...

While the two had connected for the first time 8 years ago, he had not returned home in the last 5 years. But Yiyi held on to their romance, and continued supporting him from afar, both emotionally and financially.

A month ago, A Feng told Yiyi that he finally received permission to return back to her for good so they could build a life together.

Despite being away from one another, her asked her for marriage on his WeChat Moments. By that point, everything seemed to be going in the right direction for the hopeful Shanghainese girl.

But as she continued to share her story with the officers, the narrative became more suspicious.

Yiyi had received no actual proof that A Feng was actually ill, and several parts of her story made it sound as if he might have never been ill at all.

1:

First, she says she had been told that due to poor signal on the boat, A Feng wasnt unable to make phone calls and could only use WeChat text messaging as a way to communicate.

Strict rules also prohibit voice and video calls or so she was told.

However, while it is true that not all boats can receive good enough signal while at sea, many of them are equipped with WiFi. Those that dont have access to WiFi can also use satellite phones to make calls.

2:

In their first three years of dating, A Feng claimed to have had esophageal cancer and heart attacks, which supposedly brought a lot of financial burden on him. Yiyi asked her parents to borrow RMB 220,000 to help cover his medical bills.

Over their 8 years together, Yiyi spent nearly RMB 500,000 for A Feng.

A Feng told Yiyi that he wasnt able to talk after he had had his surgery to treat his oesophageal cancer, and that they wouldnt be able to speak on the phone.

None of this added up, but the officers continued listening to see how far this story would go.

3:

As it turns out, A Feng is in fact real.

But he lives in Shanghai and was never sick.

4:

After hearing her story, a quick search by the police led them to the so-called boyfriend who was questioned to know his take on the whole story.

He recalls meeting a girl named Yiyi 8 years ago introduced by a mutual friend of theirs. He had asked her out on a date, but was told that she was sick (how similar), so they never ended up meeting.

A Feng

A Feng told the officers that he would often receive photos of Yiyi via text messages and that he would also send selfies of his own back to her.

It didnt take long before the officers realized that both Yiyi and A Feng had been playing this entire time by someone else.

But who could it have been?

The investigation revealed that it was a girl named Xiao Lei, who was Yiyis best friend as well as A Fengs classmate.

After introducing both to each other 8 years ago, the pair broke up shortly after meeting due to personal reasons, and Yiyi felt very sad about the situation.

To try to console her, Xiao Lei pretended A Feng had changed his phone number and began messaging her to appease her.

After a short while, A Feng (the real one) came to Xiao Lei to ask how Yiyi had been doing and whether she had found a new boyfriend.

Xiao Lei continued her scheme and went on to message both of them separately for over two years, pretending to be A Feng when texting Yiyi and vice versa.

By the end of 2013, Xiao Lei was facing financial problems and the interests on the loan she had taken out skyrocketed from RMB 40,000 to RMB 300,000.

Thats when her scheme escalated to a whole new level.

Because of this fraud, Yiyi i is saddled with more than RMB 200,000 of loans.

Yiyi doesnt have a stable job and pay, and her social network is very limited.

Even if she occasionally work, Lei also introduced Yi yi to work in the same enterprise with her.

This story went on from age 24 to 32. Yiyi had lost 8 years of her youth and enormous amounts of money in the process.

We hope that she can now live a happier life with friends she knows she can rely on.
