Until January 5: 365 Degrees The Immersive Experience Eugenio Recuenco

Spanish fashion photographer Eugenio Recuenco has recreated and constructed fascinating images and photographs in this, his 365 Degrees series, bringing together influences that stem from art to current affairs, history, politics and much more to create a humorous, cynical, optimistic view of the world. This exhibition is broken into three parts, the first is the exhibition proper, which shows 170 pieces of Recuencos work, while in the latter half, 12 of Recuencos photos are reproduced on site, allowing visitors to recreate Recuencos iconic photos, while finally, a video room shows the real-life influences for the photographs on show.

Until January 5: Bob Dylans Retrospectrum

Bob Dylan is well known as one of the worlds most influential and groundbreaking musicians. But did you know he has a long history as an extremely talented visual artist? The first retrospective exhibition of Bob Dylans visual artworks  Retrospectrum  debuted at the Modern Art Museum (MAM) in Shanghai on September 28 and will run through January 5. Spanning five decades of the artists career, and seven series of works, Retrospectrum will mark the artists most comprehensive art exhibition to date, enabling visitors to experience Dylans artwork in a uniquely immersive and interactive environment.

Nov 2: BUDX Freak Out 2019

Chinas biggest Halloween warehouse rave is back! The fifth annual BUDX Freak Out 2019 welcomes all you ravers, party people and freaks to their Evil Circus. Art fair season is returning to Shanghai and its time to get hyped. You can now grab early bird tickets to Art021 at a reduced price of RMB100 until November 8, after which tickets will cost RMB150. Taking place at Shanghai Exhibition Center over the course of four days, from November 7-10, Art021 brings together 110 galleries from 18 countries and 57 cities. Seventy percent of the galleries that will take part in the fair have galleries in China or other regions of Asia, making Art021 a vitally important arena in which galleries reach out to new audiences. Fans of contemporary art can enjoy sections like Detour, Beyond and Approach, with each of these sections allowing something a little bit different. Detour investigates Euro-American geographic networks and narratives. Beyond allows for larger art works by placing them outside of the fair. Approach gives a platform for young, interesting and upcoming galleries.

Nov 8-10: SAMAJAM Kids Show 2

Chinas most popular musical kids show is headed back to Shanghai. At Samajam: Kids Show 2 (Djembe), everyone in the audience receives a SAMAJAM Music Bag which contains drumsticks, tambourines, a musical tube and an African djembe. Throughout the show, kids and the entire family learn and play with the instruments, as they are led by SAMAJAM performers on stage.

Nov 9: Dance Drama Four Seasons & The Butterfly Lovers

Experience the four seasons through this touching music and dance production. Four Seasons & The Butterfly Lovers is based on the timeless Chinese legend of love and unites Chinese dance with one of the most famous pieces of Chinese classical music from 20th century, The Butterfly Lovers Violin Concerto.


Four Seasons & The Butterfly Lovers is performed by the Hong Kong Dance Company, one of the nine flagship performing arts companies in Hong Kong. Its mission is to promote Chinese dance with contemporary artistic visions and Hong Kong character.

Nov 15-16: China Shanghai International Childrens Book Fair

Calling all bookworms! The seventh China Shanghai International Childrens Book Fair (CCBF) is headed back to town. The event will take place in Shanghai from November 15-17. CCBF is not only a leading copyright exchange hub for childrens books (ages 0 to 16 years), but its the perfect outlet to inspire school teachers, parents, children, book lovers, collectors, illustrators and translators. This year, more than 60,000 new books from 70 countries and regions will be presented as part of a worldwide celebration of childrens reading. Not only can visitors buy a variety of original books but CCBF will offer 200 activities and events during the three-day event.

Nov 15-16: Der Elefantenpups - Ein Tierischer Geheimplan

If youre looking for a fun, interactive and kid-friendly event, youre in luck! The music-filled Der Elefantenpups - Ein Tierischer Geheimplan will be held at Shanghai City Theatre on November 15-16.


This time around, a new animal joins the zoo: a young female panda named Mei Yue. Being in a new place means shes suffering from homesickness and would do anything to be able to return home to China. The zoo animals work together and hatch a secret plan to cheer up Mei Yue. They make music for her with their instruments. In the end, the panda cub is able to happily settle into her new home with her new friends. Throughout the journey, kids can learn about various musical instruments and their unique timbres through a fun and sweet story. Your little ones are sure to love it!

Nov 16: The Tragedy of Macbeth

This exciting interpretation of William Shakespeares classic tragedy will be performed at 1862 Theatre on November 16 and 17. In this rendition, a modern-day couple dream about entering the universe of Macbeth which takes place in China in the past. The couple assume the roles of Macbeth and Lady Macbeth. During their quest they go on a variety of adventures, but after they return to the real world, they are forced to come to terms with their altered selves in this turbulent, contemporary world.


The performance is inspired by traditions of Asian theater and was created by the acclaimed Hong Kong director Tang Shu-wing. The multi-dimensional characters, the journey through time and space, and the unique interplay of the body, music and mise-en-scne makes for one captivating performance.

Nov 30: Bel Canto Singers - When Mozart Meets Da Ponte

This pop-opera is based on three famous works by Mozart and Da Ponte: The Marriage of Figaro, Cosi fan Tutte and Don Giovanni. The songs are rearranged in different styles from pop to rock to beatbox. The show also features Cantonese dialogue and Italian pop songs.


The Bel Canto Singers are all vocal music graduates from the Hong Kong Academy for Performing Arts. The group is comprised of some of Hong Kongs leading classical singers. The critically acclaimed group aims to create an active performance platform especially for homegrown vocal talent, as well as introducing a wider range of vocal music to the general public.

Dec 1: Allie X

Canadian singer and songwriter Allie X is slated to perform in China for the first time ever in December. The indie pop icon got her start in Toronto in 2006, but her career really began to take off after she moved to LA in 2013. Since then, shes released her debut single "Catch," which rose to number 55 on the Canadian Hot 100 and was highly praised by Katy Perry on Twitter as her "spring jam." Her acclaimed EP CollXtion I was released in 2015, followed by two studio albums: CollXtion II: Unsolved (2017) and Super Sunset (Analog) (2018). Allie X has also collaborated with artists such as Troye Sivan and Lea Michele. The songwriter co-wrote Sivans "Youth," Blue Neighborhood and LP Bloom. In addition to her amazing vocals and songs, Allie X is known for her highly fashionable outfits and dramatic live shows.

Dec 6: Beatrich

Tickets to see Lithuanian Eurodance pop phenom Beatrich at Bandai Namco Shanghai Base Dream Hall on December 6 are now on sale! Beatrich, who taught herself how to play the piano as a child, rose to global stardom after the release of her 2017 smash hit single Superstar. According to Clash magazine, the 21 year old is riding high on the back of over 1 billion streams of her music in China. This is her second tour through China this year, after she arrived in the Middle Kingdom in May. Her most recent single, Runaway was released in early 2019 and has already racked up close to 2 million views.

Dec 8: Luke Thompson

Tickets to see New Zealand folk singer Luke Thompson at VasLive on December 8 are now on sale! Thompson, a songwriter and self-managed artist, first rose to fame in late 2005 with his debut single Morning Light, which spent 11 weeks on the NZ Radio top 40 charts. His first full-length album, 2007s Here On The Ground, was a huge success, with songs like Perfect Drive, Bleed and Morning Light winning over audiences for their intimate acoustic sound. Thompson went on to release more solo works, including The Water EP in 2011, To The Common Dark in 2012, Strum Strum EP in 2015, Hosts in 2016 and Other Lost Songs in 2018. Fans have come to enjoy Thompsons gentle songs that are stripped bare and self-sufficient, the sound of a songwriter with only himself for company.

Dec 26-Jan 5: The Blue Man Group

Thats right. Everybodys favorite blue men are coming to Shanghai this year. The Blue Man Group will be performing at 1862 Theatre from December 23 until January 5, 2020. So yes, you will have to wait a few more months to catch them, but were guessing tickets will sell out fast so we highly suggest snagging some tickets while you still can! You never know what to expect when it comes to the Blue Man Group. Expect to laugh, rock out and have a blast as the bald, blue men entertain through music, art and comedy. You know a show is popular when over 35 million people of all ages, languages and cultures have seen it. Its going to be a masterful and musical trip, led by three of the boldest, baldest and bluest guys on the planet.

April 17-19, 2020: Theorie des Prodiges

The surreal theatrical production, Theorie des Prodiges, is headed to Shanghai in April 2020. The highly acclaimed show is performed by French company Systme Castafiore and combines experimental dance, music and imagery to create a truly spectacular performance. Theorie des Prodiges begins with the discovery of a 16th-century manuscript listing miracles that occurred in ancient times. This discovery fills in gaps of human knowledge, giving meaning to phenomena unexplained by fantasy and interpretation.

May 8-24, 2020: Come From Away

The longest-running Canadian musical in Broadway history, Come From Away, is coming to Shanghai. The show, which was a critical and box office success during its run on Broadway, tells the story of what happened when 38 international airplanes and more than 7,000 passengers were forced to land in Gander in Newfoundland after the September 11 attacks in 2001. Produced by ACOrange, Junkyard Dog Productions and Rodney Rigby, the musicals stop in China, from May 8-24 in 2020, will be its first production in a non-English speaking country.
