Exploring China: Where Is This 700-Year-Old Floating Temple?

Theres a mysterious, highly resilient temple floating around the waters of Hubei province - so resilient, in fact, that it has stood its ground for over 700 years without moving an inch.

Where and what is this mystical place?

Located in the Yangtze River near Ezhou City in Chinas Hubei province, the Guanyin Pavilion, also known as the Goddess of Mercy Pavilion, was originally built in the Yuan Dynasty in 1280 AD.

It is the only temple built on the nearly 4,000-mile long Yangtze River, and has been repaired on several occasions throughout the Ming and Qing Dynasties.

The 300-square-meter temple sits on a large reef rock in the river. During the rainy season, its foundation is submerged in water, making the building look as if it was floating.

Although not officially open to the public, many adventurous swimmers come and explore its structure.

Over the years, floods and heavy rainstorms have washed away trees and more modern structures, the Guanyin Pavilion still stands strong.

How could it survive and stand upright the rapids and floods of the Yangtze River?

Its lower half is made of arc stones to both slow the floods and release them; a testament to the architectural engineering of its ancestors.

In 2006, this magnificent wonder was officially approved and announced as a national key cultural relics protected unit, and has managed to remain preserved thanks to close maintenance by the Cultural Relics Protection Department.

Would you like to go see the Guanyin Pavilion for yourself in Hubei Province?
