What Kind of Flower is China's National Flower?

The China Flower Association (CFA) said in a recent statement that the peony was recommended as Chinas national flower, sparking heated debate online.

Before that, the CFA launched an online poll to solicit public opinion on whether to name the peony or another flower as the countrys national flower.

The association listed 10 candidates including the peony, plum blossom, lotus flower, chrysanthemum, orchid, Chinese rose and narcissus.

Primary conditions for nominating Chinas national flower include originating in the country and having a long history, being elegant in both shape and color, and being able to represent Chinese culture, according to the CFA, adding that the flower should also have a profound cultural connotation.

Supporters believe that the peony should be chosen as it represents prosperity and grace, while others reckon the plum blossom, as a noble flower that braves the cold, should be named.

Some also suggested that the lotus flower, which represents purity and dignity, is more suitable.

Some experts said it makes sense for China to have two national flowers - the peony and plum blossom.
