Super Typhoon Bavi Upgraded to Orange Alert — Landfall Expected Friday Night
Typhoon Bavi is closing in. The storm is now within 24 hours of China's warning zone, with landfall expected along the Fujian-Zhejiang coast on the night of July 11.
Where Things Stand
At 8am today, China's meteorological authorities upgraded their emergency response to Level 2 — covering typhoon, torrential rain, and severe convective weather. A typhoon orange warning was issued at 10am.
As of this morning, Bavi remains a super typhoon, centered approximately 1,140km southeast of Keelung, Taiwan. The current forecast has it grazing or making landfall along northern Taiwan during the day on July 11, before hitting the Fuqing (Fujian) to Wenling (Zhejiang) coastline on Friday night at strong typhoon or typhoon level.

Storm Surge Warning
Forecasters are flagging storm surge as a major concern, particularly as the timing coincides with astronomical high tides. Storm surge warnings have been issued across the region:
Red: Wenzhou (Zhejiang), Ningde (Fujian)
Orange: Fuzhou (Fujian)
Yellow: Taizhou, Ningbo (Zhejiang)
Blue: Shanghai, Jiaxing, Zhoushan (Zhejiang)
Rainfall Reach
Bavi's impact won't be limited to the coast. From tomorrow, Taiwan, Fujian, and Zhejiang will see heavy to extreme rainfall. Northern and northeastern China — including Beijing, Tianjin, Hebei, and parts of the Northeast — will also be hit by significant rainfall driven by Bavi's circulation interacting with the subtropical high-pressure system.
After July 13, Bavi may push further inland, bringing another round of heavy rain to the Huai River basin, North China, and Northeast China — though the exact track remains uncertain.
Stay Safe
Avoid mountain areas, riverbanks, and flood-prone zones. Watch out for urban flooding, landslides, and strong thunderstorm activity. Keep an eye on local forecasts as the storm develops.
