A 23 year old university student in Henan, China, suffered acute kidney failure after pushing himself too hard during intense gym workouts, prompting doctors to warn people against overtraining.
The student developed rhabdomyolysis, a dangerous condition where damaged muscle tissue breaks down rapidly and releases harmful substances into the bloodstream. This later led to acute kidney failure.
According to nephrologist Liu Haofei from the First Affiliated Hospital of Henan University of Chinese Medicine, the young man had been focusing heavily on leg training and overexerted himself.
His symptoms started with blood in his urine before he stopped urinating completely. By the time he went to hospital, he could not walk without help.
Tests showed his creatine kinase level had risen to more than 20,000 units per litre, over 100 times the normal level, so he needed emergency dialysis.
Doctors say similar cases can happen when people suddenly start intense exercise without building up their fitness gradually. They advise beginners to increase workout intensity step by step, drink enough water, avoid training in hot and humid weather, and stop immediately if they feel unusual muscle pain.
Exercise should improve your health, not destroy it.
