A dispute arising from a kindergarten accident in Zhejiang Province was recently resolved after weeks of disagreement over medical expenses and compensation between the family of a foreign professional and the parents of an injured child.
The case began during a group photo session at Tangya Town Central Kindergarten. According to local authorities, the child of Rabiu Sale, a foreign talent recruited to work in the area, was playing with a classmate, identified by the pseudonym Xiaoyu, when he accidentally scratched Xiaoyu's face, leaving a scar. Although the injury occurred during normal interaction between the children, the consequences of the accident soon became a source of conflict between the two families.
Following the incident, Xiaoyu’s parents sought compensation of between 7,000 and 8,000 yuan. However, the two families were unable to reach an agreement on responsibility and the amount of compensation, leaving issues related to medical treatment and reimbursement unresolved. An assessment later determined that the child's medical expenses and anticipated follow-up treatment costs totaled approximately 3,000 yuan.
The dispute was further complicated by language barriers and cultural differences. As negotiations stalled, the parties turned to the local justice office for mediation.
Mediator Zhu Huizhong coordinated discussions among the foreign family, Xiaoyu’s parents, and the kindergarten. To overcome communication challenges, he relied on mobile translation tools and conducted repeated consultations with all three parties.
During the mediation process, discussions focused on clarifying the circumstances of the accident, determining the respective responsibilities of those involved, and addressing concerns from each side regarding compensation. Relevant legal provisions concerning accidental injuries involving minors were also explained to the parties to help facilitate a resolution.
After several rounds of negotiations, the kindergarten, the foreign parent, and Xiaoyu’s parents ultimately agreed to share the costs equally, with each party contributing 1,000 yuan toward the child's medical and follow-up treatment expenses.
The agreement ended a dispute that had remained unresolved for weeks and provided a practical solution for covering the costs resulting from the accident, bringing the matter to a close for all parties involved.
