Global higher education analytics firm QS Quacquarelli Symonds (QS) has officially released the 2026 QS World University Rankings, featuring over 1,500 universities from 106 countries and regions.
The results reveal intensifying global competition among top institutions, with nearly 45% of universities from the Chinese mainland improving their positions compared to last year — a continuation of China's consistent upward momentum in international rankings.
Global Highlights from the 2026 Rankings:
Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) retains the No. 1 spot for the 14th consecutive year. It is followed by Imperial College London in second place and Stanford University in third.
Chinese universities continue their strong performance:
Peking University remains at 14th globally.
Tsinghua University climbs to 17th.
Fudan University rises nine places to reach 30th.
In total, five universities from the Chinese mainland are now ranked in the global top 100.
South Korea maintains its influence in the region, with 43 institutions featured in the rankings and 16 of them improving over last year.
Universities in the Hong Kong SAR show significant progress:
The University of Hong Kong moves up to 11th globally.
Among regions with at least five ranked institutions, Hong Kong shows the second-largest improvement in higher education performance.
Singapore solidifies its global standing with two universities in the top 15:
National University of Singapore (NUS) ranks 8th.
Nanyang Technological University (NTU) is placed 12th.
Both outperform Japan's top-ranked institutions in indicators related to international engagement.
For the first time in recent years, Germany sees more universities improving than declining in the rankings.
Italy marks a milestone, with Politecnico di Milano entering the global top 100 at 98th — a notable achievement for the G7 nation.
These developments underscore the increasingly competitive nature of global higher education. For the Chinese mainland, the challenge moving forward will be to further assert its leadership through innovation, international collaboration, and reputational strength.
