A viral video showing a cat being dragged by a car, which sparked widespread outrage online, has been confirmed as an accident following a police investigation.

The footage, posted on social media on May 19, depicted a cat entangled in a leash and dragged along a road near Haikou's Century Park. The incident quickly drew public attention, prompting local police to intervene.

Authorities from the Longhua Branch of the Haikou Public Security Bureau stated that the driver, surnamed Li, was not the cat's owner, and no contact information was found on the animal's collar or leash. Investigators determined that the leash's handle had accidentally become trapped in the car's undercarriage, leading to the tragic incident. Police found no evidence of intentional harm.

A representative from the Hainan Small Animal Protection Association confirmed the cat's death and said the organization had taken custody of the body while awaiting potential contact from the owner. If unclaimed, the cat will be cremated.

Responding to online speculation about images showing "two cats of different colors" near the same vehicle, police clarified that lighting and camera angles caused the discrepancies. The cat involved was black-and-yellow, and the leash was black-and-white.

Authorities urged drivers to thoroughly inspect their vehicles, including wheels and chassis, before driving to prevent similar accidents.
