What is the "Gift Giving" Feature?
The newly introduced feature enables users to purchase products from the WeChat Mini Store and directly send them as gifts to friends. Once a gift is sent, the recipient has 24 hours to claim it. This feature is set to change the way people think about giving gifts, making the process more seamless and fun.
According to the WeChat Mini Store "Gift Giving" User Guide released by the official team, the feature is now in its gray-scale testing phase. Eligible products and stores will automatically enable the "Send Gift" option. Once the user makes a purchase, they can choose to send the gift directly to their friends within the WeChat ecosystem.
Here's how the process works for sending a gift:
Select a product from a store that supports the "Send Gift" feature.
On the product detail page, there will be an option called "Send to Friend".
After clicking it, a confirmation page will pop up where users can choose the item, select the amount, and confirm the gift.
Once payment is completed, the gift will automatically be sent to the chosen friend.
Receiving a gift is simple and straightforward. The recipient will receive a notification in their chat window, notifying them of the gift. They can click on the message, fill out their delivery address, and click "Accept Gift" to officially claim the gift. After accepting, the order can be viewed under "WeChat > Me > Orders and Wallet".
Eligibility for the "Gift Giving" Feature
The feature will be available for most products in the WeChat Mini Store, except for jewelry and education-related categories. Any product priced below 10,000 RMB is eligible for the "Send Gift" feature, and users will be able to easily identify which items are available for gifting from the product page.
Each user can only send one item to one friend per transaction.
Once a gift is sent, it cannot be transferred to another friend, even if the recipient refuses or doesn't accept the gift.
If the recipient does not accept the gift within 24 hours, the order will automatically be canceled, and the money will be refunded to the sender.
The refund will be issued to the original payment method, similar to how WeChat Red Envelopes work.
The Response From Users
WeChat's new feature has already sparked a variety of reactions among users. Some users find the new gift-giving experience appealing, especially as it allows for seamless gifting without the need for physical delivery. On the other hand, some critics feel that the lack of surprise (since the recipient has to input their address themselves) diminishes the excitement.
