Mother with cancer, using 999 ‘legacy photos’ to inspire others

A Chinese influencer and cosplayer, who garnered public attention with her "999 legacy photos" project after being diagnosed with breast cancer, recently announced her victory over the disease, inspiring countless mainland netizens.

On December 10, the 42-year-old Beijing mother of three, known as Wang Xiaobei or "Beiye is Superwoman" online, shared a video celebrating her triumph over cancer with her 1.6 million followers on Douyin.

With excitement, she declared: "Today, I officially announce the end of my 999 'legacy photos' project because I have successfully beaten cancer!"

Wang detailed her journey: "From my diagnosis last year to now, I've undergone endocrine therapy, surgery, chemotherapy, and 20 rounds of radiotherapy. I've finally made it through and successfully passed the critical period. Moving forward, I'll still need to take lifelong medication to prevent recurrence."

After her breast cancer diagnosis in October last year, Wang initiated the plan to take 999 "legacy photos" to capture beautiful moments in life despite the challenges posed by her illness.

Before her diagnosis, Wang was a vibrant, cheerful mother passionate about photography and cosplay, even winning the national championship on the Chinese reality show Super Diva in July last year.

Throughout her treatment, Wang shared many touching moments, particularly her interactions with her supportive husband, which led many to comment: "That moment puts all romance dramas to shame."

In one poignant video, she recounted the emotional experience of shaving her head after losing her hair to chemotherapy.

"Initially, I couldn't bring myself to do it, so I asked my husband for help. He repeatedly asked if I was sure. When I finally told him to go ahead, I didn't expect him to shave his head in solidarity."

Tearfully, she added: "He's someone who has always loved to dress up and take care of his appearance. Watching him sacrifice the hair he was so proud of overwhelmed me with emotion, and I couldn't hold back my tears."

In her latest video, Wang reflected on how many fellow cancer patients initially faced their diagnoses with optimism, only to later succumb to despair. However, she noted that some found renewed hope after watching her videos.

Inspired by this, Wang decided to continue her "legacy photo" project with a new focus; instead of being the main character, she would photograph other patients.
