WeChat has recently rolled out version 8.0.54 for both iOS and Android users, marking the official release of several new features currently in internal testing. Many WeChat users, who are tight on storage space, are celebrating this update as a saving grace for their devices.
One of the most anticipated new features is the support for the automatic clean-up of original images and videos. In previous versions, if users did not manually view the original images in chat histories, WeChat would automatically clear these after a certain period, making them unviewable. Now, WeChat introduces a toggle for automatic clean-up.
This feature is currently in the testing phase, and users selected for the internal test can find and enable the "Auto-clean original images and videos after 14 days" feature in the "Me" - "Settings" - "General" - "Photos, Videos, Files, and Calls" menu.
According to the feature description, once enabled, users can temporarily view original images and videos within a 14-day period; after automatic clean-up, they can still view lower-quality images and videos in chats. When users first click on "View Original" in a WeChat chat, they will receive a prompt as shown below:
After clicking "View Original" on an image in a WeChat chat and waiting for it to load, a tips will appear in the lower left corner stating "You can view and save the original within 14 days," along with a new "Save to System Gallery" button.
For important high-definition images and videos, users are advised to save them to their system gallery in a timely manner. Without enabling this feature, the related button will not be visible.
After enabling the feature, if there are high-definition images and videos that users need to access periodically, it is best to save them to the system gallery promptly to avoid automatic clean-up after 14 days. Some tech and digital bloggers have tested the new feature and found that, for example, a 97.4MB video will automatically reduce to about 3MB after 14 days, with a compression ratio of up to 97%. The space occupied by an original image is nearly 7 times that of a standard image.
This update is set to significantly enhance the user experience by managing storage more effectively and ensuring that valuable media can be preserved with ease. WeChat continues to innovate and cater to the needs of its diverse user base, ensuring that the platform remains at the forefront of messaging and media management.
