Did You Wear Red Clothes Today? The Surprising Choice for Sun Protection!

As summer brings intense sunlight and stronger ultraviolet (UV) rays, skin protection becomes a critical concern. So, what color clothing offers the best sun protection during these hot months? Surprisingly, the answer is red!

On July 6th, amidst the bustling streets of Nanjing, reporters observed that locals were meticulously protecting themselves from the sun. Sunscreen garments, hats, umbrellas, and arm covers were common, with many opting for light-colored attire.

When reporters asked the public which color they believed was most effective at blocking UV rays, most answered light colors. Contrary to popular belief, darker colors actually provide better sun protection

Medical experts explain that in fabrics of equal quality, darker colors are more effective at blocking UV rays, with red offering superior protection compared to black, and black better than orange.

The rationale behind this is that dark-colored clothing absorbs more UV radiation, making it suitable for prolonged outdoor activities. While light-colored garments might feel cooler due to less heat absorption, they do not offer significant UV protection and are not recommended for extended sun exposure.

Choosing the right fabric is also crucial for sun protection. Densely woven, heavier fabrics like denim and corduroy are excellent for blocking UV rays, but may not be the most comfortable choice in the summer heat. Currently, the main materials for sun-protective clothing are synthetic fibers, predominantly polyester, which tends to offer slightly better UV protection than nylon.

In addition to clothing, it's vital to protect other exposed areas, especially the scalp. While many people wear long sleeves and even face veils or masks to cover their faces, the scalp often remains unprotected.

Doctors advise that the scalp, being delicate, requires careful attention to sun protection. Scalp sun protection can be categorized into "soft" and "hard" methods: soft protection involves the use of sun protection sprays which require washing the hair with each application, whereas hard protection refers to wearing hats, using umbrellas, or wearing hooded sun-protective clothing.
