2 Foreigners Attacked! Foreign Ministry Responds


Mao Ning, the spokesperson for the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, addressed the incident on June 24 that involved the assault on two foreign nationals during the routine press conference on June 25.

Tv Tokyo: Yesterday, a Japanese parent and child sustained stab wounds in Suzhou. This incident was either a random attack or a deliberate attempt to target Japanese individuals. Do you have any additional, more detailed information?

Mao Ning: On the afternoon of June 24, two Japanese nationals living in Suzhou, Jiangsu Province, suffered an assault. On the site, a Chinese national sustained injuries. They received prompt hospital transportation and prompt treatment. 

The injuries sustained by the two Japanese nationals are not life-threatening. The hospital is currently rescuing the Chinese national who sustained injuries. The perpetrator was apprehended immediately. We are currently conducting a more detailed investigation into the matter. It was an unfortunate occurrence.

According to a preliminary police assessment, this was an isolated incident, as I discovered. Additional research is currently underway. Such isolated incidents are possible in any country around the world. As with its citizens, China will continue to protect foreign nationals in China adequately.

Police Report 

The Suzhou Public Security Bureau's Suzhou High-Tech Zone Branch released a police report on June 25.
At approximately 4 p.m. on June 24, a knife assault at the Xindi Centre bus stop on Tayuan Road in Suzhou High-Tech Zone injured two Japanese nationals and one Chinese national. 

Patrol officers from our bureau apprehended Zhou, a 52-year-old male who had recently arrived in Suzhou from another region and was unemployed. We immediately transported the injured to the hospital for treatment. 

At present, the Chinese national, who sustained grievous injuries while attempting to restrain the suspect, is still receiving emergency treatment. 

They are currently treating one Japanese national, who is in stable condition, and discharged the other on the same day. Zhou has been subjected to criminal detention. The law will severely punish the illicit behavior, and the investigation is currently underway.
