Online scientific journal Nature Medicine has published a report on the origins of the novel coronavirus, referred to as SARS-CoV-2 in its article, based on genomic data.
Among other findings, it concludes that COVID-19 "is not a laboratory construct or a purposely manipulated virus.
Scientists who were part of this study traced the novel coronavirus back to cases before Wuhan, claiming that it may not have originated where we think it did.
According to the scientists who took part in this study, it is possible that mutations in cell surface proteins (proteins that are embedded in or span the layer of cell membranes of more complex organisms) may have triggered the pandemic, but that the weaker version of the virus had been circulating in humans for years, if not decades, before becoming what is known today as COVID-19.
