How to Dispose COVID-19 Related Medical Waste?

As the only professional platform for safe disposal of hazardous wastes and medical wastes under the China Energy Conservation and Environmental Protection Corporation (CECEP), the CECEP Ecotech Company has assumed the main role of novel coronavirus medical waste disposal logistics.

There are two core methods of treatment of medical waste produced in fighting the deadly novel coronavirus. The first method is incineration inside of incinerators with high temperatures no lower than 850 degrees Celsius; thereafter, slags and ashes will be sent to a landfill.

The second method is sterilization in a high-temperature chamber by high-temperature steam (no less than 134 degrees Celsius) for 60-90 minutes, so as to achieve hazard-free treatment, and once again the medical waste must be cleaned again after crushing, according to Lei Ming, general manager of CECEP Ecotech.

During the collection and transportation of medical waste, special vehicles and specialized personnel should firstly be determined; special transport routes should be developed, and special notes should be made, said Ouyang Yiqiong, general manager of an environmental governance company in central Chinas Jingzhou.

Ouyang added that ordinary medical waste is collected every 48 hours, the medical waste produced in fighting against the novel coronavirus is collected and treated basically every 12 hours, and no later than before 24 hours has passed since the waste was created.

Ouyang stressed that the overall disposal process of medical waste related to the outbreak of pneumonia caused by the virus is similar to that of ordinary medical waste, "but the requirements for personal protection and transportation are even stricter."
