Although this time of year is supposed to be festive considering the Spring Festival holiday, much of our time off has been filled with countless daily reports on the 2019 novel coronavirus (2019-nCoV) updates and how much its spread across China and other places in the region.
Unsurprisingly, this has led to increased anxiety not only among those directly affected by the virus but others living in such places as well.
Thats why we decided to take a short break from all this negativity.
In the midst of all this chaos, what has been on everyones mind in the last few days and weeks?
Masks.
How important are they?
In a nutshell, you cant go out without one, which has led people to go on a buying frenzy and, consequently, stock depletion.
The saddest part in all this is how such depletions have also led to fake masks being sold to people in desperate need of them.
Luckily for some, their imagination and creativity helped them conceptualize very original masks of their own so they wouldnt have to wait in line for hours only to find out that there store was once again out of stock before they could even reach it.
In fact, the most-searched-for topic on Weibo a few days ago was the most hardcore masks youve ever seen.
How hardcore, you might ask?

Bras mind you, they have become increasingly popular as DIY masks on the internet!
Despite all the creativity, some people are unfortunately still left behind when it comes to wearing masks.
This was the case of a grandmother found without one on the D5319 train to Linfen, in Shanxi Province on January 30, who told the conductor that she hadnt been able to buy one after all the drugstores shed been to were already out of stock.
In a show of kindness and empathy, the conductor gave the spare mask he had to the grandmother, who wiped her tears off her mask, moved by his offer.
She was well aware of the risk that not wearing a mask could bring to those around her and her own health, and had been using her clothes to cover her mouth up until this point.
In such troubling times, its important to continue helping one another to ensure everyone can stay safe and healthy.
Offering a hand to someone in need goes a long way towards getting through this difficult period as a united community.
Trust the medics who have been fighting on the front lines!
In hospitals, some medical staff only sleep three to four hours a day. To improve work efficiency, some have not drunk a drop of water for 12 hours. Some have even used diapers to continue workout through their shifts and not waste their protective clothing.
On the evening of January 27, the army rushed to send 15,000 sets of protective clothing to Wuhan.
When the outbreak in Wuhan was at its most alarming, 84-year-old Chinese respiratory expert Zhong Nanshan who helped out during the 2003 SARS outbreak, and other medical staff working with Zhong Nansha, got on the high-speed train to Wuhan without hesitation to offer their help.
With 25 years of experience and despite all the danger lying ahead, this chief physician volunteered to go help Wuhan staff and wrote: Alive or dead, without payment!
Chen Hong, a member of the local medical team, shows deteriorating skin after applying so much disinfectant and hand sanitizer on his hands for a long period of time.
The palms of Fan Hua, another member of the local medical team, were all wrinkled after sweating a lot working for eight hours straight.
Together we can fight this virus outbreak.
Together, we stand strong and will overcome challenges that come our way.
Meanwhile, we send our prayers to all the medical staff and patients, wherever they may be, in hope that everything gets better soon!
