China to extend Spring Festival holiday to contain coronavirus outbreak


Chinese authorities on Sunday announced plans to extend the Lunar New Year holiday up to Feb 2nd, work to start in Feb 3rd. The holiday was originally set to end on Jan. 30.


Schools and educational institutes restart day will follow the later announcement from the Ministry of Education. 


All Group Tours Suspended


As required by the Ministry of Culture and Tourism, domestic group tours and such travel packages have been halted since Friday. For some outbound tour groups, the trip could continue if the departure time is before Monday and the safety could be guaranteed, the association said.


However, all tour groups including outbound ones must be suspended after Monday, it said.


Wild Animal Trade Banned


[China DailyChina just banned all trading of wild animals at markets, restaurants and e-commerce platforms. The ban is implemented from Sunday, Jan 26, until the risks of the epidemic have been resolved, the notice said, as experts have confirmed that wild animals were the origin of the virus.


Jointly released by the State Administration for Market Regulation, Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Affairs, and National Forestry and Grassland Administration, the notice requires wild animal breeding farms to implement quarantine policies and forbids any selling or transporting of wild animals.


The public can report any trading of wild animals to 12315 hotlines, the notice said.


US Confirm 5th Corona Virus Case


US officials have confirmed a new case of the coronavirus in Arizona. This brings the total to five cases so far.


New Measures in Shanghai


[Shine] A temporary ban on all large-scale funerals, civil affairs authorities said on Sunday. Participants should, as far as possible, be restricted to the immediate families of the deceased, the Shanghai Civil Affairs Bureau said.


Shanghai suspended all interprovincial long-distance coaches and all the luxury cruise liners operating from Sunday.


No Metro trains between Huaqiao and Anting from Sunday afternoon. 


All Shanghai schools to remain completely closed until new semester begins. Schools, both public and private, should not organize any classes, group activities or day-care services during the winter vacation. Students should not be asked to return to school before the new semester begins.


Didi Suspend Beijing Service


Beijing Didi ride hailing service suspended its Beijing service until further notice. 


Nine-month-old baby infected

5 million-plus leave Wuhan


More than 5 million people have left Wuhan, before lockdown, due to the Spring Festival and epidemic, and about 9 million people are still in the city, Wuhan Mayor Zhou Xianwang said on Sunday night.


He said the lockdown of the city has inconvenienced local residents, and the government has been making the utmost efforts to help those who have difficulties in daily life.


Number of people infected may increase by 1,000 in Wuhan, estimated Wuhan's mayor.


Wuhan to ban motor vehicles


[Xinhua] Ordinary motor vehicles will be banned from roads from Sunday in the downtown areas in Wuhan, the local government said.


Only authorized vehicles such as official vehicles and licensed cars to carry supplies and offer free transportation are exempt.


The city has also recruited 6,000 taxis to provide free rides to local residents. The taxis are subject to unified dispatch under community committees to offer services such as food and medicine delivery as well as emergency medical treatment for non-febrile diseases.


Patients with fever should be transported by professional vehicles from the epidemic prevention department with proper isolation measures for drivers.

Chinese scientists race to develop vaccine


The Chinese Centre for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) announced on Sunday that researchers had isolated viruses and were selecting a strain, according to Xu Wenbo, a director of CDCs virus institute.


Xu told reporters that researchers had used high-throughput genetic sequencing to identify pathogens one day after the first four samples were sent from Wuhan on January 2. The vaccine is currently being test on infected stem cells. However, there is no set date for the final development of vaccine. 


Shut down and Postponed


[Xinhua] The Potala Palace in southwest China's Tibet Autonomous Region will be shut down from Jan. 27 until further notice in an effort to prevent the spread of the novel coronavirus, local authorities said Sunday.


The 14th Chinese National Winter Games has been postponed. The Games was originally scheduled to open on February 16, and conclude on February 26.

First Case in Africa


Health officials are dealing with a suspected case of coronavirus in Ivory Coast, the country's health ministry has announced.


An unnamed student, who returned from Beijing on Saturday, is undergoing further tests after showing flu-like symptoms. If confirmed, it will be the first case of the deadly virus in Africa. The 34-year-old woman is currently in isolation.


The woman's test results are expected on Sunday evening.

 


Schools & Universities Extend Holidays


[China Daily] All schools in Beijing to postpone their spring terms amid the coronavirus outbreak.


China HK extended school holidays for non-tertiary students to Feb 17.


A number of universities and colleges in China have postponed the start of the upcoming spring semester 


In Wuhan, over 10 universities, including the Huazhong Agricultural University, Yangtze University and China University of GeosciencesWuhanannounced on Saturday that they will postpone spring semester, with the date of school openings undecided.


Some universities in Shanghai and Chongqing also announced similar postponements. Shanghai University said the start of the new semester will be delayed till Feb 17.


The Ministry of Education also said on Saturday that exams for the enrollment of students in some majors, such as sports and arts, which usually take place between February and April each year, will be delayed to a later time.


In Beijing, the nation's top art schools, such as the Beijing Film Academy and Central Academy of Drama, said they will postpone the dates for student enrollment exams this year, with the exact dates "to be decided".


International Evacuation


Australia's Foreign Minister Marise Payne said diplomatic staff are working with Chinese authorities to evacuate Australian citizens from Wuhan.


Japan to evacuate its citizens in Wuhan via a chartered flight. 


The French government plans to evacuate French nationals from Wuhan, offering several possible solutions for those who wish to leave, including a permanent bus service: official statement. 


The Russian embassy in Wuhan said Moscow and Beijing were discussing a possible evacuation plan for Russian citizens, both from Wuhan and other parts of Hubei province, the RIA news agency reported on Saturday.


Britain Foreign Secretary is believed to have asked officials to look into a possible airlift of British expats. Two hundred British citizens who are trapped in Wuhan will be rescued in a huge evacuation plan.


The US government plan to evacuate 1,000 Americans but citizens will have to pay for a seat, CNN reports.


Shanghai Suspend Interprovincial transport


Shanghai on Sunday suspended its metro's inter-provincial line running between Huaqiao Station and Anting Station to prevent the spread of the epidemic: Shanghai transport authority
