Jingan Tiki Bar Birds of Paradise Flies the Coop Tomorrow

By Cristina Ng

After about half a year of operations, the Austin Hu and Yao Lu backed Birds of Paradise is closing its doors tomorrow (January 21). The announcement was made via both founders WeChat moments as well as on the bars official Instagram account.

Although only with us for a short time, the tropically-themed watering hole received good reviews (including ours), garnered many awards and had several guest shifts to remember. That was no surprise to us, considering Hu and Lus previous collaboration, Union Trading Company, regularly makes appearances on Asias 50 Best Bars lists.

If you are as bummed as we are, go console yourself with a final order of okonomiyaki fries and a couple of mai tais. The team will be transitioning the BOP brand into an educational platform spreading Chinese tiki culture, so this probably isnt the end of the story. When we checked with chef Hu he told us that they would continue to do events and pop-ups under the brand to spread the gospel of tiki love.

Heres the statement:

It is with a heavy heart that we are writing to inform everyone that Tuesday, January 21, 2020 will be Birds of Paradises last day of operations. We opened with great optimism and enthusiasm, and we are incredibly proud of everything we have accomplished in this short amount of time. We would like to thank all of our friends and guests for their support and patronage and invite you all to BOP these next few days to drink the bar DRY. We will be transitioning into an educational platform promoting Chinese tiki culture and advocating our philosophy of Happy Escapism. We hope to to see you all here!
