Nov 14: The Drums

Deemed the next big thing after the release of their debut self-titled album, which saw them sounding like jangle pop New Order acolytes, and which included standout tracks like Lets Go Surfing and Forever and Ever, reception cooled on The Drums with their later albums, as they became less hook-driven and exploratory. Jonathan Pierce and his band arrive in China with album number five, Brutalism, in the bag.

Nov 14-16: New SHAKE City VI: The 90s R&B Concert

Shanghais livest 90s R&B party returns for another dose of new jack swing and hip hop soul for the dancefloor. Courtney Knott, Kevin Maxim, and Shakes six-piece band take it back to back in the day with the music of TLC, Jade, Janet, Ginuwine, The Neptunes and more. Dress Code: Supa Dupa Fly.

Nov 15: Poetry in Shorts/Plastic

Local band Poetry in Shorts link up with newly minted Maybe Mars outfit Plastic for an evening of debauchery. Poetry in Shorts are made up of members from legendary Shanghai outfit Dirty Fingers, while Plastic are based out of Kunming and have been turning heads on the east coast with some excellent live shows.

Nov 16: MarySeeTheFuture

The first Taiwan band on this list, MarySeeTheFuture, has been rocking out in China since 2007. The foursome has made a name for themselves on the back of some excellent records and performances. Catch them rip up the stage this weekend.

Nov 16: Finsterforst

Formed all the way back in 2004, German folk metal band Finsterforst enjoys a cult following. Basing their music around themes that explore nature and German myths, this intriguing band takes to the stage in Shanghai this weekend to regale listeners.

Nov 16: Neal Brennan Live in Shanghai

Brennan is a prolific performer of stand-up: his first one-hour stand-up special Women and Black Dudes premiered on Comedy Central in 2014. In 2017, Brennan released his second one-hour stand-up special 3 Mics on Netflix to widespread critical acclaim. In 2019 Brennan released an all-new half hour of material on Netflix as part of the Comedians of the World series.

Taiwan band Cicada released their latest album Hiking in the Mist at the end of October. The album is rooted in nature and takes the listeners on a journey through Taiwans Beidawushan park, reveling in the delights of forest and mountain.
