Absinthe Yan Heng Solo Exhibition/Free Biographies Sun Yuan & Peng Yu

The title of Yan Hengs solo exhibition, the artists third solo show at Arario Gallery, comes from his time spent in France, where he viewed works by notorious absinthe drinkers Degas, Van Gogh, Picasso et al. Yans slick painting technique pits the primitive against more timid life objects, creating tension and conflict for the viewer. Arario also sees the opening of Free Biographies by Sun Yuan and Peng Yu this weekend. Having previously shown at places like the Guggenheim in New York, the duos installation work has garnered quite a bit of praise, as they juggle ideas of material concerns, social relationships and power struggles.

From One to Another Yin Changzhi Solo Exhibition

Inspired by an incident in his studio, when a painting fell from a wall and was broken, Yins awareness of sudden shifts in nature, the arbitrary idea of the painted surface of a picture and the idea of freedom all heightened. This show, his second at Gallery 55, follows on from those ideas, as Yin plays with shape, layers, location, colors, textures and more.

365 Degrees The Immersive Experience Eugenio Recuenco

Spanish fashion photographer Eugenio Recuenco has recreated and constructed fascinating images and photographs in this, his 365 Degrees series, bringing together influences that stem from art to current affairs, history, politics and much more to create a humorous, cynical, optimistic view of the world. This exhibition is broken into three parts, the first is the exhibition proper, which shows 170 pieces of Recuencos work, while in the latter half, 12 of Recuencos photos are reproduced on site, allowing visitors to recreate Recuencos iconic photos, while finally, a video room shows the real-life influences for the photographs on show.

Affective Imagoism Sang Huoyao Solo Exhibition

Sang Huoyao brings 52 works, most of which are paintings, but also installations, collages and new media, the majority of which have been created in the past 10 years. Sangs experiments with ink painting tends to revolve around metaphysical questions, with the artist gaining inspiration from philosophers of ancient China, such as Laozi and Zhuangzi. In his works, Sang obfuscates the imago in question, seeking to tease out ideas of human consciousness beyond the material world.

The Omen Gao Yuan Solo Exhibition

Born in Kunming in 1986, Gao Yuans work centers around animation and painting. Her fascinating and surreal animated short film, Lunar Dial, took her years to make and made an appearance at the Vancouver Film Festival and International Film Festival Rotterdam in 2017. Shes back at Capsule Shanghai for a second time, this time with another short film called Cloud of the Unknown and with paintings used in the film. The short is a preview of what is to come for Gao, as she aims to turn the story in Cloud of the Unknown in a full feature-length film.

Bob Dylan Retrospectrum

Sure, Bob Dylan is a Nobel Prize winning writer, poet and lyricist, but his lesser known creative endeavors include painting with oil, acrylic and watercolor, and even include ironwork sculpture. Modern Art Museum, god bless their souls, have collected more than 250 of Dylans works spanning over 40 years to Shanghai this weekend. Dylans early ink experiments will show alongside the likes of works from Mondo Scripto sketches. Enjoy this fascinating insight into the creative polymath's works until January next year.
