H5N1 Outbreak in a Hunan Farm

 


An outbreak of the deadly H5N1 bird flu in Hunan province has been reported.  


"The outbreak occurred in a farm in the Shuangqing district of Shaoyang city. The farm has 7,850 chickens, and 4,500 of the chickens have died from the contagion. Local authorities have culled 17,828 poultry after the outbreak, according to a statement by Chinas Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Affairs on Saturday.


No human cases of the Hunan H5N1 virus has been reported.


Vaccine Found, Testing Started


 


According  to South China Morning Post, Hong Kong researchers have already developed a vaccine for the deadly Wuhan coronavirus but need time to test it, according to infectious diseases expert Professor Yuen Kwok-yung.


We have already produced the vaccine, but it will take a long time to test on animals, Yuen said,


To test the vaccine, it will have to be injected into an animal to see if it produces a good immune response, Yuen said. The vaccinated animal would then be exposed to the virus to see if is protected.


If the vaccine appears effective and safe in a number of animal species, it will go into clinical trials on humans. This takes at least one year even if expedited, Yuen said.


Entry Ban by US, Australia, & Japan 


The United States and Australia are temporarily denying entry to noncitizens who have recently traveled to China, hoping to limit the spread of the new coronavirus to their countries, while Japan will bar foreigners who have been in the Chinese province at the center of the outbreak.


More Entry & Flight Bans


Vietnam barred almost all flights from and to mainland China, Hong Kong and Macau until May 1. Only flights that have received approval from Vietnams Civil Aviation Authority will be allowed during the ban, which took effect on Saturday.


Turkmenistan Airlines began an indefinite suspension of flights to Beijing from Saturday because of the outbreak


Four airlines in the Philippines announced they were reducing or canceling flights to China: Cebu Pacific Air, Philippine Airlines, Philippines AirAsia and the local unit of AirAsia Group Bhd, the Reuters news agency reported.

Greece embassy stops visa issuance


The Greek Embassy in Beijing, China, has sent out a message to all travel agents in China, announcing the decision to stop visa issuance until Monday, February 9, 2020, at least.

Russias government on Saturday halted visa-free tourism for Chinese nationals and stopped issuing them with work visas over the deadly the deadly coronavirus outbreak.


Myanmar's foreign ministry Saturday announced that the country will suspend its visa on arrival service for Chinese travelers starting on Sunday.

Thailand said Saturday it will likely evacuate its citizens from Wuhan after Feb. 2, adding that 182 Thais in the Wuhan area have registered with the government.


More Counterfeited Masks, Busted


In Guangdong, police have detained six suspects after busting a secret counterfeit mask production base in Foshan's Nanhai district of South on Jan 30. Three sets of production equipment, plus 175,000 fake N95 masks and 80 cases of raw materials, were seized in the den, according to a statement released by Guangdong Provincial Department of Public Security on Friday.


Meanwhile in (China) Hong Kong, on Thursday, customs seized surgical masks with a manufacturing date of March 2020 at a pharmacy on Nelson Street in Mong Kok. They were packed in boxes, each containing 50 pieces priced at HK$280, with a market value of about HK$380,000.

Han, a man in Beijing, was detained for taking the bus without wearing a mask despite being persuaded by the bus supervisor.
