On January 25, 2021, news about the cherries, beer, frozen red shrimp, milk jujube and ice cream in many places across China which tested positive for COVID-19 was released by the Chinese mainstream media, sparking concerns over netizens about food safety in the upcoming Spring Festival. And also, an environmental sample from a vaccination unit in Suzhou tested positive for nucleic acid, fueling concern.

Food & Its Outer Packaging Continually Tested Positive

Per the local CDC of Tianjin, Wuxi, Zhoushan, Zaozhuang and Shijiazhuang, as described in the following subsections.

Is the Imported Food Safe for Consumption?

Per Feng Zijian, deputy director of the China CDC, the positive result of the imported goods doesn't mean its infectious. It depends on the amount of virus contamination and whether the contaminated virus is active or not. If the viral load is very low, it will not cause infection risk to consumers.

Environmental Samples of the Vaccination Points Tested Positive

In addition to the imported food, on January 24, one of the doorknobs of the fever clinic of Suzhou Yongding Hospital tested positive for nucleic acid. Based on the requirements for prevention and control, the hospital suspended medical treatment in a timely manner. Fortunately, the nucleic acid tests of the related personnel are all negative. Additionally, the hospital is also a COVID-19 vaccination unit.

The Announcement Issued by the Suzhou Yongding Hospital

Why it has tested positive? Is it contagious?

Per the Chinese CDC, nucleic acid tests were carried out in the vaccination units in some provinces and cities. The results showed that some of the environmental samples in the injection room, observation room and external corridor were positive. Regarding the whole genome sequencing, it was initially determined that the positive result was caused by the vaccine solution.

As the COVID-19 vaccine inoculated in China is inactivated vaccine, whose virus has lost its infectivity and pathogenicity, but still retains a relatively complete viral nucleic acid fragment. Thus, it will result in a positive result when tested, but is not infectious.

Completely Under Control in March C Expert

Therefore, according to the Chinese CDC, for vaccine recipients, please reduce the number of accompanying personnel during vaccination. And do a good job of self-protection as required, including wearing a mask, cooperate with the work staff for health inquiry, and temperature detection. Furthermore, try not to bring personal belongings into the vaccination room.

According to Zhang Boli, an academician, from now until the end of February, the whole country still needs to be highly vigilant against sporadic outbreaks in regions. If all the prevention and control measures are well done, the epidemic could be basically controlled by March.
